This, like many of my works, was entirely improvised - what you are hearing is exactly the way it came to life for the first time, and it's never been repeated the same way since. This was recorded live in the summer of 2012, in the middle of the desert - the Black Rock desert of Nevada, during the Burning Man Festival, where I was sharing music at various camps throughout the week. This particular set was at Spin Cycle camp "The home of the [hula] hoopers", where my dear friend Revolva had invited me to share music. After some technical issues (which are frequent in the harsh conditions), I felt the flow of music through me, and this track in particular seemed to take on a life of its own. I was glad to have recorded it, and months later as I was reviewing it I decided on the name Courtesan, as it reminded me of a Renaissance era and an enticing and seductive, yet perhaps slightly dangerous beauty.
